Free Spirit Nursery and Covid-19, March 25 2020

Dear valued friends and customers,

In light of the accelerating spread of coronavirus at this time, we have made the difficult decision to temporarily close our retail nursery. However, it will still be possible to purchase our plants, pots and supports by placing an order, which we will prepare for you to safely pick up. Please see details below.
The best and most efficient way for us to keep you informed about the goings-on at the nursery under the current conditions is for you to subscribe to our Newsletter.

Here is how we hope to process orders and keep all of us safe:

According to Harvard Health Publishing, the virus survives for up to 24 hours on cardboard and up to 72 hours on plastic i.e. plant containers, labels etc. After receiving your emailed order, we will get that ready for you including the plants’ labels and then we will leave everything in situ and without getting touched for at least 3 days (72 hours). After this time period, your order will be ready for pick up, virus free, from a table under a tent in our parking lot.

How to place an order:

Meanwhile, for the time being you can browse our 2020 Plant List and/or our updated Manual both of which are posted on our website. The Manual will also come in a printed version and will be available very soon. For care workers the hard copy Manual will be free of charge. Once you have found the plants you like, your first step is to connect with us by email. In your email, you can send us your choices and/or questions and we will endeavor to reply within 48 hours. Plant supports and the Manual can also be ordered this way.

When can I pick up my order?

You can pick up your order during our usual opening times: Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm as long as your pre-order has been able to off-gas ☺ here for at least 72 hours. Say you’ve placed your order on a Wednesday, your plants will be ready for pickup the following week Thursday, Friday or Saturday.

How do I pick up my order?

You drive into our parking lot as usual and we will welcome you from a safe distance and indicate where your plants are located. No one will have handled those boxes for 72 hours and you can safely put them in your car. If there are multiple cars in the lot, please wait in your car and generously uphold physical distancing requirements when you leave your car. Fingers crossed this system will work and if not, we’ll make and post the changes. Thank you in advance for your patience, as we will only be able to handle one or two customers at the time.

How do I pay?

We will have the invoice ready with your order. If any changes have to be made, we will send you a revised invoice by email. You don’t have to pay in advance. We will try to send you the total amount owing before you come out to pick up your plants. You can take your plants home and send us an E-transfer or you can bring, or mail us a personal cheque or you can leave us the amount in cash in a Ziploc bag. Whichever you prefer.

What do I do if I want to browse the nursery?

You can’t. Drones only ☺. No collisions. Unfortunately, for everyone’s health and safety, we have to be very strict about the closure of the retail shopping area. However, we invite you to follow us @freespirit_nursery on Instagram, and to keep an eye on our website where we hope to introduce a number of new, creative ways of experiencing the nursery and our beautiful plants.

What do you do when you need advice on planting?

For now we can’t look at images on phones or tablets so please contact us via the contact page on our website with your planting questions. The Manual (in hard copy or on-line) already has a lot of extensive information and advice for each individual plant but we will do our best to get back to you when we can.

Do you need pots?

Please contact us via email so we can together work out the details.

Mail Order

Mail order will proceed for Existing Mail Order Customers Only, as outlined in our mail order information and order form.

*Important notes:
— All parts of our retail and private garden are closed to the public. Only the parking lot will be open and during business hours.
— Sorry, there is no washroom facility.
— All garden walks and Group Tours are suspended until further notice.

We will really miss the wonderful personal contacts and we can’t wait until life is back to normal. Please stay well and healthy and remember that gardening is always a good thing to be doing, especially these days. We hope you will all get through this stronger than ever!

We are thrilled and grateful for your continued support.
